Creating a Family Mission Statement

Three months ago,  I participated in an on-line book club hosted by Simple Mom http://simplemom.net.  The book we read was “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families” by Stephen R. Covey.  This book had a profound impact on my life, and influenced me in my decision to become a full-time Mom.

In Habit 2, the challenge was to create a Family Mission Statement. As the four of us sat around the dinner table, I shared the idea of creating a mission statement for our family. My oldest, who was four at the time, was the first to speak up , “Listen to God” she exclaimed proudly.

Here’s our family’s mission statement:

Listen to God and follow the Holy Spirit

Develop and enrich our marriage

Educate, guide, and nurture our children so they can get into  heaven

Live simply, so others can simply live

Create a peaceful, relaxing haven at home

Lead a healthy lifestyle

Do you have a family mission statement?  Have you ever thought about creating one?  Are there any obstacles in your way?

DH and I went to a marriage retreat last fall. Creating a marital mission statement was one of our assignments. We went out to a nice dinner, took a notebook along, and worked out our mission statement. It was a great thing to do. I think that probably the process of creating it is even more important that the fact of having it, if you know what I mean. Our statement included our children (the two married ones and the adult son with Down Syndrome who lives with us) and our five grandchildren. I’m going to go dig it out again. Thanks for the reminder!

    • Tish,
It really made a difference in my life. I always had goals at work, so it was something I could relate to. Frankly, I have done a better job of achieving goals at work than at home, but creating this Mission statement is a start.

thanks for sharing this, Mary. I want to read Covey’s book now and write our own family mission statement. Funny thing: my husband and I each have goals for ourselves but the most important one is how we want our family to go forward each day.
