An Old Fashioned 4th of July

Thursday, my husband and I woke up at 3:00 AM, packed up the car, and carried our girls half asleep in their jammies and buckled them into their car seats.  We drove, and drove, and drove, for 14 hours to an old-fashioned 4th of July.

For the past three years we have made this trek on 4th of July weekend to slow down a bit, visit old friends, and celebrate Independence Day.  It is wonderful to see my husband with his old friend.  My husband and his friend  met when they were 15 years old, and were active in their church youth group together.  The two of them laugh and carry on just like when they are teenagers. It makes me a smile to see a man wo has been through so much in the past 12 months simply enjoy himself and relax.

Yesterday, we went to an Independence Day parade in the quaint little town they live in.  Our girls caught candy, watched horses, sheriff motorcycles and floats go by and it reminded me of a time long ago when the rodeo came to my hometown.

Even though we are an hour way from Disney, we did not go.  Instead, we eat home cooked meals, swam in the pool, watched the fireworks and old movies. Today, I even took a nap!
